When you talk about “correct” English, what exactly are you talking about? At what point did English become fossilized? 1930? 1950? It can’t be much before that, because you’d be hard pressed to find anything which followed your “rules” in the original edition. Sure, a lot of the examples you give represent bad style or lack of logic, but you can’t talk about correctness where grammar is concerned. Talk about logic, consistency by all means, but don’t misuse the word “correct”, please!
