Washington, D.C., is often shortened to Washington, the District of Columbia, or simply D.C. Except on the Yahoo! front page where the abbreviation is missing the periods:

It really doesn’t matter which abbreviation you use. Just make a decision. And if you work with other writers, make sure you all know what that decision is.

Ah, the old serial comma didn’t save me from producing a confusing list. I meant that there are three shortened forms but the order that I chose produced the confusion: the District of Columbia, D.C., and Washington.

You might appreciate the one about the follow up book to the very popular grade school classic, “Better English.” The sequel, of course, was called, “More Better English.”
