It’s not always the writers either. I’ve had editors change my its to it’s on plenty of articles. I even had one change a ; to a , just becuase “no one knows when to use a semicolon anyhow.”
I think a lot of “editors” are just people who like to correct others, but have no training in writing, language, communication, or even editing beyond what they learned in high school. And from what I see of high school graduates, that’s not enough to write a decent email, much less correct others’ words.
