Why Snoop Dogg changed his name to Snoop Lion

Did Snoop Dogg change his stage name to Snoop Lion because it’s easier to spell? Was he tired of seeing misspellings like this one on Yahoo! News’ “Who Knew?”:

And this one in the accompanying video:

I think that if the Yahoo! staffers get Snoop Lion wrong, the rapper should just call himself Snoop.
