Surprise! It’s wrong

It’s no surprise that there’s a little subject-verb disagreement on the Yahoo! front page:

The subject, group, is singular; the correct verb is surprises.

    Now we’re back in British English (“tyke” from earlier). In B.E., company names, sports team names, &c. are plural (maybe collective) nouns and take the plural (“G.M. have announced …”).

    But as some nit-picky folks might point out, Yahoo! is an American news organization.

      If the subject of the sentence were the name of the group (Wu-Tang Clan), there might be an argument for using the plural verb, but the subject is “group.”
