Diagramming Sarah Palin
Slate’s Kitty Burns Florey asks, “Can Palin’s sentences stand up to a grammarian?” The self-proclaimed “amateur language buff” believes that “diagramming a sentence provides insight into the mind of its perpetrator.”
Take this sentence from a Katie Couric interview:
It’s very important when you consider even national security issues with Russia as Putin rears his head and comes into the air space of the United States of America, where—where do they go?

She was less successful with other Palin statements.

These are excellent
I’m not sure, however, about the “Yoda grammar” in the Obama slogans (and no, I’m not an Obama supporter; I’m not even American). I learned in my History of Language class that word order is becoming more important in English, but I don’t believe that we are at the point where this structure is considered wrong.
I’m interpreting the sentence as “(This is) change we need,” rather than as “We need change,” which the “Yoda” comment implies.
