How to avoid a mistake

One way the Yahoo! front page could have avoided the mistake of hyphenating an adverb ending in LY would have been to omit “previously unbeaten.” Why? It’s pretty clear that the “Nittany Lions’ perfect season” means that the team was unbeaten.

There’s a bit of a disagreement between the subject and the verb in this headline from the Yahoo! front page:

What’s the difference between a pitbull and a hockey mom?

“Hockey mom” is spelled correctly. What do they have in common? They are both two words, even though the Yahoo! front page would have you believe otherwise:

School administrators lacking depth

This portion of a photo caption from Yahoo! TV describes the principal reasons for considering Andrea “mean”:

I think it’s because Andrea lacks ethical standards or principles, and not because school administrators lack depth.
