When he was a young man, my father fought in Golden Gloves tournaments. He was an amateur boxer until he met my mother, who convinced him to give up the ring to spare his good looks from the pounding of opponents. But he continued to love the sport and when I was growing up, he followed boxing on TV every week. Those evenings with him, as he sat in his chair with my brothers and I sitting on the floor, are some of my fondest childhood memories. I still have a warm spot in my heart for boxing.
So, it was with a mixture of near-rage and disbelief that I read this on the Yahoo! front page:
Why was someone so ignorant of the sport I love allowed to write about it? Doesn’t the writer know that in the Olympics there are five judges, but only one referee. It is the ref who failed to stop the fight. It is the writer who failed Yahoo!’s readers.
