Fun Fact: This is wrong

I’ve never understood the concept of the “Fun Fact.” I don’t think I’ve ever met a fact that was fun. Funny, maybe. But, fun? Not so much.

Anyhoo, Yahoo! omg! wants to tell us a fun fact about Courteney Cox. The only thing I found funny, but not fun, was the writer’s inability to match a verb with a subject:

getting wet nor movies

When the subject of a verb is two nouns joined by neither…nor, the verb agrees with the noun closer to it; in this case, acting. And the verb should be was.

“Fun facts” seem to be something like “free gifts” – a word pair that takes on a new meaning, independent of each,

Marketing types have been using it: candy bars are labeled “fun size”, which really means “smaller”.

But still, in the sense of “amusing”, these little bits of trivia might well fall into the class of “fun facts”. And they do stretch the idea of “trivial” to an extreme.

Sometimes I break out on a mild grin. But never (for some odd reason) as I would after a roller-coaster ride.

What do you think?
