Gender identify confusion

It seems that the Yahoo! Parenting writer has a little confusion about the gender of a woman’s betrothed:

A fiancée (with two E’s) is a female. This stay-at-home mother is engaged to a man; he is her fiancé.

    That I didn’t know. Always thought it was fiancè for all genders.

      The American Heritage Dictionary makes the distinction between fiancee and fiance, since the words are taken from French, which distinguishes between male and female nouns. But fiance is being used more often these days to refer to either gender, though I can find no authority that approves of fiancee to refer to a male.
