If it’s really cold where you live, the weather might be called wintry. Except on yahoo.com, where it’s wintery:
In the U.S., the preferred pronunciation is with two syllables and the preferred spelling is wintry. Choosing an uncommon spelling of a word is not as bad as two to‘s, which I find too, too funny.
It would take approximately 2 nanoseconds to proofread this sentence on yahoo.com:
So, how come nobody took the time to do that?
After after spotting the repeated word on yahoo.com, I noticed the picture of Queen Elizabeth surrounded by children:
And then I read the caption and was shocked. Did no one at Yahoo! notice that the children in the picture are far too young to be the queen’s grandchildren? Did no one realize they are the queen’s great-grandchildren?
Instead of repeating instead, the Yahoo! Sports writer should have opted for making the sentence shorter and choosing the right word:
Someone at yahoo.com needs to learn to proofread. If they did, they’d take this from from this teaser:
Oh, lordie. Will the management at Yahoo! Style ever hire writers and editors who know actual English words? Let’s skip on over the repeated words, ignore the wiling (because even thought it’s a real word, it makes no sense in this context), and focus on the expression to shill out:
This writer, who happens to hold the title of “news editor,” clearly has no idea what shill means. And she has no idea that a person who spends money is shelling it out, not shilling it.
This is truly a sad, sad statement about the state of journalism today. Or maybe just about the state of “journalism” at Yahoo!.
