Slapdash writing is half right

Someone at Yahoo! Shine was trying to use dashes correctly — to indicate a sudden break — but misplaced one:

The second dash belongs after girls. But the first one is correct! That’s 50 percent right! Not bad if you’re satisfied with slapdash writing.

Let’s be blunt: This is not good

Is the writer of this photo caption on Yahoo! Shine crushin’ on a coworker named Jim?

Or could it be the character Jim from the TV show “The Office” that is the object of the writer’s lust? Geez, just goes to show you how important correct punctuation and capitalization can be. Especially in titles. Like “The Devil Wears Prada,” which is the title of a movie.

What would be better? Spelling Anne Hathaway’s name correctly

The honor of being named to Yahoo! Movies‘ best-dressed list is a bit tarnished when your name is misspelled:

Even worse: Misspelling Nicollette Sheridan

What’s worse than being on a worst-dressed list? Having your name misspelled by Yahoo! Shine on a worst-dressed list:

At least I didn’t call him Mickey Mouse

How could the writer of this Yahoo! Shine photo caption pick on poor Mr. Rooney?

The man is about 89 years old! Give him a break! I think he looks surprisingly good for his age, even if he looks exactly like Mickey Rourke. You be the judge:

Inauguration Day mishaps

How many ways are there to misspell inaugural? At least two, according to Yahoo! Avatars:

The correct term for the day a U.S. president is sworn in is Inauguration Day (it’s a proper noun). The writer obviously needs to gear up and check a dictionary before posting nonsense like this.

Palin, Hasselbeck in steamy sex scene?

Is that Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Gov. Sarah Palin in the “raciest daytime TV” scene reported on Yahoo! Shine?

Damn! I’ve gotta start watching more daytime TV.

I wonder if the writer’s insecurities about spelling caused him or her to add an extra E to fiancé in this photo caption from Yahoo! omg!:

A fiancé is a male; add an E and the word indicates a female.

Sidestepping on the language

The writer of this piece from a blog on Yahoo! Shine seems to be sidestepping some conventions of the English language:

The misspelled sidestep, missing the, and repeated words are all hallmarks of a rushed (or indifferent) writer. You’d think that when writing about as serious a topic as abortion, the writer would want to project a cogent, coherent, and intelligent image.
